I don't really have any holes in my collection that I'm seriously going after. Yeah, I have incomplete series that I always have an eye out, but if I were to only buy those coins, I'd either have to deplete my child's college account, or have nothing to buy. I have certain passions. I'm passionate about buying circulated, eye appealing, original, 19th century type material, especially 2-3-20 cent stuff. The uncirculated stuff is generally too expensive. My eye will generally detect this material in a dealer's case or in a dealer's inventory online, especially if it's a better date of the 2-3-20 cent series'. As you can see in my recent thread ( https://goccf.com/t/28948) of purchases, I purchased coins I have absolutely no "need" for. What the heck do I need another 1865 3CN? An uncirculated Morgan dollar? Sometimes I worry, that I'm now just accumulating/hoarding without purpose except possibly towards some sort of inevitable financial ruin. I doubt I'm alone in my nutty endeavor. How about you? Edited by Prethen 04/22/2008 10:07 am

I buy all kinds of 1878 Morgans but most of them are B1 Reverse Morgans and they are all duplicates since I have one of each B1 Reverse Morgan already

Had to laugh when I read this. I've certainly started down this route for certain of my series. I find it hard to pass up high quality IKEs or SBAs, as neither are known for large quantities of those grades. As I get closer to completing the Franklin halves, I'll probably do the same there as well. Yup, you're not alone.

I started collecting wheat pennies got all but the 3 key dates now. Then started on indian heads...still working on them since many are expensive inherited a Buffalo nickle book with mostly common buffalo's in it and now I am trying to fill it as well. Next kids got me collecting the new quarters...we've filled 4 folders out of pocket change. Someone gave me some proof sets they had bought 2001, 2002, 2004...now I have all the 80's most the 2000's to date and am working on the 90's now. Also have started a type set with a couple dozen coins in it...everytime I read about a new type of coin I want to find a nice example and stick it in the type set. Needless to say seems like every month I start a new area of collecting coins... I usually limit my selections to circulated coins xf though for older coins and mid grade uncirculated for modern coins and don't go for slabbed coin which helps the wallet alot. No I am pretty sure you are not alone Prethen only diff is I collect anything and you get hung up on particular ones. Do some reading on many types of coins the history of coins. The stories behind them is what compulses me to keep buying different types. I love showing my coins and always have a small narative about each one. For example love to tell people about the No cent nickle and how it was counterfieted by gold plating it. I am now looking for a nice gold plated one to throw into my type set to give a visual image to the narrative.

Prethen ... but are you having fun? We each have our own paths. I don't attempt to rationalize mine. I am nearly incapable of parting with a coin once I have it in my collection. My 1878 8TF collection is currently "out of control" ... but I'm having a ball!

For the most part, I'm a "one of a kind" collector. Once I've filled a particular hole in my collection, I tend to move on. Some coins, though, I would buy duplicates of...nice examples of the Type I Standing Liberty quarter, for example. Who could ever have too many of those!

I'm afraid I haven't even evolved yet to where you're at with this theory !... I'm still blindly "hoarding" any and everything I can get my hands on that facinates me !.....The thought of "financial ruin" seems far off and distant and as long as I have fun along the way......the dark hole that I could be headed towards doesn't seem that serious ! One can always "part with their babies" if they absolutely have to! I just want to buy as much, and as good of quality as I can afford at any given time as I go through my years of "hoarding"....... I really do look at it as a child, grandchild, or some family member "after me" is going to find this collection VERY interesting......I hope !......I DO collect for me....but not JUST for me. So "dupes" do not bother me AT ALL !.......In fact, if it's quality...that's completely fine with me. I even have some "Silver Proof sets" bought in duplicate.....some Silver Eagles in duplicate, commemeratives....Morgans....Gold Eagles.....Large Cents...Two Cents......all kinds of stuff ! Maybe when I get too old, I could sell off the "dupes" or something but for now ........ I'm HAPPY !....

Isn't admitting that you have a problem the first of the 12 steps?
My want list is very long and my budget is very small. Intentionally buying duplicates isn't a problem that I've had to deal with.

Prethen, I'm guilty of the same nutty behavior!
What else would you do with your money?

I also seem to have that problem of buying dupes. But most of the time it is accidental and I end up keeping it anyways. Every so often I will come across a small coin show located in odd places. The last one was in a mini-mall of all places. 3 tables set up by dealers. Since I don't always carry a list with me of what I am looking for, if I see something I like I buy it. Then get home to realize I already own 1 or 2 or 5 copies of it.

I'm still pretty new to the coin collecting scene, so buying dupes isn't an issue just yet, since I do not have near as much as most here. I have no excuse buying dupes anyways, my phone has my full spreadsheet of coins I own and need, so no accidental purchases there. I will eventually start the upgrading process, then have dupes of everything lol. I have so many years ahead of me, my collection will full of them soon enough!
I'm a coinaholic! I have been dupe clean for 9 months, 14 days, 3 hours and 15 min now! =)

Accumulation is part of my family genetics. I can't do a 12 step. I have collections/accumulations of coins, stamps, leather bound books, old science instruments, human skulls, gemstones and minerals......everything but a lot of money. Maybe I can concentrate some of the areas. Love double dies and oddities!

It's not really a hoard until you can't run fast enough to keep the stack from tipping over. I just bought a electrotype Bust Half on ebay for no other reason than to see what a electrotype looks like up close. "Purpose? purpose? We don't need no stinking purpose."

Nice going on the electrotype! I completely understand. I have a 1879-S Trade dollar ( yes I know) that I bought from someone who had it for 20 yrs just for entertainment value in the 15 yrs I have now had it. Darn thing looks so real, not an electrotype, muled, or cast, just fantasy! Jim
