Amazing. The ads are SO intrusive that the site can't even process my $2.49 payment to go ad free while I fix the images here. ALL my browsers are choking so hard on the ad scripts that the payment won't even process.

Sadly, Bobby, I have no such problems.

I do however, blackhole a whole list of ad servers on my firewall...

This is what I am saying:
If I decide to use a paid service it is not up to the administrators of this site to tell me I can't use it, simply because they think the service should be free. Yes the new charges are outrageous but it is my choice and that of other posters as to whether we use that service. It should not be dictated by the administrators. 18 months is a long lead time and very reasonable. I think the outright blocking of Photobucket was an unreasonable kneejerk reaction and reflects badly on the administrators of this forum. The appropriate/professional response would have been to simply warn people of the issue ( suggest alternatives) and let individual posters decide whether to find an alternative to PB or continue. Its a basic principle of free market forces( and democracy)!

Guess what? This isn't a democracy. It's a site paid for and provided by the owner(s) for our use - subject to their terms & conditions.

The "Sandbox Rule" is always in effect here. This is Bobby's sandbox, we play by his rules...

I'm not interested in joining the current disagreement but I am most interested in Bobby's comment.

We've got thousands of useless topics now thanks to their nasty bait and switch.

Over the years we have all helped build this wonderful resource for collectors. It is full of interesting topics, great research, suggestions and opinions that are so valuable to collectors. Without the pictures from Photobucket our great resource has taken a huge hit.

When I joined the forum we were limited to 90K size images and no easy way to reduce image sizes. On this forum it was a popular suggestion at the time to use Photobucket and I followed the suggestion until now. I'm sure that I've posted thousands of pictures that are now broken links. Probably many other members did the same.

Here's my suggestion. I'm now retired, but my career had been in computer programming and large databases. One of my specialties was to write 'One Shots'. These were the one-time programs to help corporations move data from one platform to another platform when there was no existing compatibility between the two.

Is it possible to restore the pictures by reading through a Photobucket account and using the tag of a picture to get the picture and store it in a file along with the photobucket Direct Tag? Or you could just download them as the tag info will be included. Then you could read through coin community posts and replace the photobucket links with the matching link and the actual picture that is now on our server?

I understand that the member would have to provide Photobucket logon credentials to you. I would certainly do it as I will probably never use photobucket again and I used it only to store these pictures.

It may be bobbys sand box.. but I think bobby and others should look at why Photobucket went in this direction... freeloading users who were not prepared to pay small amounts for the service. Its the greed of the users not photobucket that is really to blame.
Watch this space Bobby will end up blocking many more photo sharing sites as other providers hit the same problem. Those free loaders who abandon Photo bucket will overload other "free" sites resulting in the same reaction. Third party hosting is expensive and those freeloaders who refuse to pay are the true greedy people here! The silly thing is you have made the situation worse by disabling the photos posted by those of us who can still share our photo-bucket pictures. I won't argue with you socialists any more.

I think you are missing the larger point regarding our decision to ban its use.

Suppose we allow people to still use them. They pay their fees and everything is fine for now, but what if they stop paying down the road? We end up with even more useless posts in the future.

If it were up to me I would not allow any offsite photo embedding. Unlike some, we are looking at the long term here. We want this site to be useful for generations.

This is the only way to be 100% sure there is not another "Photobucket Incident".

Glad to hear it, because one more snarky comment like that and you'll be doing your arguing elsewhere... I am probably the most patient moderator of the lot of us who work here.... so think about that for a minute before you decide to reply...

austrokiwi, ad revenue, ever heard of it? Those 'freeloaders' enabled that revenue. Think about it, half fast.
