Capped Bust Series And Barber Halves

I've collected and learned a lot but I have a few questions: 1) Why do Capped Bust quarters and dimes cost more than half-dollars? 2) Why are Barber halves more expensive than both Seated and Capped Bust? Both questions relate to coins graded in XF. I bought a very nice 1829 Half for $150 in XF and can't believe this will be the least expensive in the above group! Imthealphaomega Pillar of the Community United States 3210 Posts	Posted 07/25/2017 08:41 am Think about what coin was worth back in the day. A half dollar was a lot a money in the early 1800s. Dimes and quarters circulated more and therefore there are less in higher grade. Half dollars didn't circulate as much and therefore there are more examples of higher grades. Same goes form Barber halves except Barber halves, quarters and dimes were issued during a time when it was common to have change in your pocket. That's why the price of Barber halves goes up drastically in VF and up, cause they did a lot of circulation and most commonly you'll find them anywhere from AG to Fine. Report this Post to the Staff

In the early to mid 1800's it was common for banks to keep bags of Capped Bust half dollars in their bank vaults. Because of this, today we have a better survival rate for Capped bust halves.
