I bought this 1878 Morgan silver dollar from this guy because he said, it's a Rev of 1878 (Long Nock Reverse)Open Nostril VAM. He said, it's rare. I tried googling an error like this for an 1878, but I cannot find anything.I know it's not a pretty Silver Morgan silver dollar and I do not know what that yellowish stuff is. I am new to collecting and I get the feeling I might have wasted my money on this. I love the Silver Morgan dollars, though.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Gail

I don't know much about the Morgans but here is a list for the VAM's. I think we will need to get some much clearer images and a good closeup of the date
to see if it might be the 7/8

This one here maybe the one the seller was referring to
VAM79

I don't think it's a 7/8. Here's a closer pic...I don't have the best phone camera.

Thank you much for your help!

Your images are a bit small but it does appear to be a long nock reverse (type B1 reverse) A close up image of the reverse - tail feathers, arrow feathers and olive branch would help to narrow the choices down to exclude possible 7 over 8 tail feather varieties that also have a long arrow nock. As far as the nostril, all the B1 reverse die varieties ( VAM numbers) except one have a missing nostril so it may not be a rare variety based on this feature alone. Attached is the quick attribution guide for the B1 long nock reverse VAMs. http://www.vamworld.com/1878-P+B1

And the yellowish stuff looks like glue or tape residue. If soe acetone would safely remove it, but it might not improveit due to selective toning because the glue protected the surfaces from toning.

Agree, I don't see this coin improving much.

Here's more pictures of the reverse. I don't quite understand all the coin collecting abbreviations yet but I'm getting there.

Hopefully, these pics are more helpful.

Thank you for your response!

I think give it a bath in 100 % acetone. It can't get worse by doing that. Also, how much did you pay?

I believe it's a VAM30 based on the extra talon below the olive branch. VAM30 is listed as a 7 over 8 tail feather variety with none of the 8 feathers showing between the 7 tail feathers. http://www.vamworld.com/1878-P+VAM-30

Was the $26.00 I paid for it too much because of the condition it's in?

Actually, I'd be happy to pay $26 for a coin like that. No, you didn't pay too much.
