I'm still pretty new here and new to collecting. Can anyone tell me if they know how the error happened on the old penny? Does it have any value? Any info is much appreciated!

@sarah, happy one month anniversary of being on CCF. With regard to your Indian Head cent, those big divots look like post mint damage from a sharp tool of some type. You can see how the material on the rev was flattened between the E and the N in CENT from the hit to the obv on the indian's temple. The damage detracts from the value of this coin, but it is still worth keeping!
