We've got a lot of specialists and a lot of generalists here. I think it would be fun to make a game where we get to challenge our fellow numismatists to procure matching examples of obscure coins we have in our collection!

How to play:
Starting with the coin I post here, one person poses a "challenge" coin. All other members then compete to post another example of that coin first. Whoever posts it first (determined by posting order on the forum time) wins! To keep a steady pace, the criteria will become more general every 24 hours until either someone posts a qualifying coin, or nobody can produce an example. After 72 hours, the challenger wins, and can either post another coin, or nominate someone else to go.

Rules:
- Criteria for the days can't be easily applied to all possible courses this thread may take, so it is the duty of the challenger to set them.
- All of numismatics and exonumia is fair game
- Challenge coins must have at least 10 known examples; ideally more than 50.
- You can post esoteric varieties, but aim to give people a fair shot at winning on day 1. For example a 1999 WAM is fair, but one random 2009 LP2 doubled thumb variety should allow any roughly comparable variety to win on day 1.
- No foot in the door posts. Posts edited to add photos are disqualified!
- In the event of a dispute, there will be a duel to the death the challenger (or mods) will decide the winner.
- If the challenger or new challenger goes AWOL for more than 24 hours, the second place winner gets to pick the next coin. If all else fails, jbuck gets to go.
- If you don't have a coin, be sure to spam "GO FISH" to boost your post count

I'll get us started with an easy one in the spirit of the HFBCWG thread:

Great Britain "Cartwheel" twopence, 1797

Criteria:
Day 1: 1797 2d
Day 2: Any coin from the "cartwheel series" (including the Isle of Man issues)
Day 3: Any 2d coin, OR Any George III coin, OR any coin from 1797

Aaaaand... go!

Sorry, I don't understand this game. A new coin is posted after less than 48 hours? It doesn't give anyone else much time to post a similar coin to the OP's one. Think I'll pass on this, too confusing.

I had an Isle of Man cartwheel penny ready to post today, and found it had moved on to something quite different...

Sorry about this one guys! I was aiming to keep this thread chugging along at a good pace, but I guess we need to slow things down a bit so people have time to dig out coins for pics etc!

The initial intent wasn't to stall around for the full 3 days, but to give someone a chance if some high roller comes along and posts a Stella. That way we aren't all stuck waiting around for them to come back and post a Julius Caesar aureus. And so on and so forth. Open to suggestions to make it more fun but still challenging?

For now, the challenge is for someone else to turn up a 1578 1/8 ecu. If nobody has one, it could maybe expand to any date 1/8 ecu, and so on.

Maybe this will work, maybe it wont. I tried lol

@dorado, the closest I can get to this new challenge coin is a 1582 Franc. I'm happy to wait a day or two to give others to find something closer in their own collections.

I think I 'sort of' understand the rules, although they are a bit murky.
I do not have a 1/8 ecu. The closest I can come is this:

1578 France 1/4 ecu of Henri III:

This thread/game could easily stall out with *impossible* coins, or those that are not impossible to find, but esoteric and/or old enough that the average CCF member is unlikely to own any. For example, the early hammered coinage of Europe. Or Indian states. The list goes on and on.

Suggestions to make the game more fun/interesting/possible:

1)- Allow for exact, close, and approximate matches.
2)- Do it on a points system. For example, 5 points for exact match of date + value + country or jurisdiction; 3 points for close (two of above three); 1 point for approximate (one of the three criteria).
3)- Keep a running total of each participant's point count.
4)- Highest point count for each challenge wins the chance to post the next challenge.

This way it is more likely someone will have something to contribute. Under these rules, my 1/4 ecu would be a 3-point entry. Any other Henry III French coin would count for 1 point.

Good idea! Maybe we should also expand the time frame to give people enough time to see the challenge and find/photograph their coins? Say a week?

Let's see how this goes:

Current challenger: Dorado

Challenge coin:
France Henri III 1/8 Ecu, 1578

Points:
Mysilveryears: 3

Entries close: 8/23, 11:59:59 PM forum time
