Im not sure of what I have, I was looking for an ds on a 1943 s steel penny and while using the zoom on my camera , the image of the 5 in place of the 4 stuck out. I thought it was light and shadow camera trick but when I looked at the 1953 penny the 5 is same size .
i dont have the experience to say its an error. need someone that knows if this ever came up before.

It is a 1943S steel cent, there is some Die Deterioration going on, damage PMD on the 4. The S mintmark is from die wear, rounded off, common on steel cents since metal was harder to stamp than copper, dies wore out much faster and had many more faults happen.

Normal 1943-S. The 4 shows up a lot that year like that, not PMD. Check ebay.

I can see why you would ask, but it is random damage.

PMD has caused what looks like a 5, but that is a very nice Steel cent you have there.
