I did something like this last year and figured I would do it again this year with some new batches. What I did was buy "unsearched" rolls of wheats from various sellers on ebay and inventoried what I got. I only did teens through thirties as there were a lot of wheats to go through. I will start off with the first batch of wheats I got, with more coming. Take a look here for a PDF of what each batch had http://www.permitfinder.com/coins/W...Shootout.pdf First seller is http://myworld.ebay.com/moorecards123 I found his rolls to be pretty good. He had some nice BU cents in the 50's, 40's and a couple in the 30's. I bought 36 rolls. Paid $39-42 per 6 roll lot. Shipping is extremely slow, over 2 weeks for delivery. I did pull a 22 weak D, a regular 22D and a 24D out of some recent lots not included in this shootout. Second seller is http://myworld.ebay.com/fronterhouse2007 , he had some nice Indian cents in his lot a total of 44. I got 8 rolls from him and paid around $10 a roll. Very fast shipping. Third seller is http://myworld.ebay.com/beat416 , had some AU 30's a few BU's in the 50's, most of the coins were really worn though. I bought 10 rolls for 9.95 each. Fast shipping and included a roll of BU memorials and a half roll of BU nickels from the 60's. Forth seller is http://myworld.ebay.com/billiec310 now I buy a lot of his coins, in fact I just got a 5000 bag from him last week. I have bought 1000's of BU cents from him and of all the sellers I buy from he is my favorite. Last year these rolls sold for around $10 each, now the word has gotten out an they are through the roof. I picked up 6 rolls for around $40 each and they were worth every cent. Shipping is always fast, items ship the next day and provides tracking information. Fifth seller is http://myworld.ebay.com/ryan_fowler , there was a ok mix here, I bought 8 rolls for $11.50 each. I was disapointed in the shipping time, 2 weeks for delivery. 9 Indians in the mix Sixth seller for now is http://myworld.ebay.com/koi7881 I got 2 rolls for $8 each. There were some nice dates but limited BU cents. Seventh seller is http://myworld.ebay.com/rgment1 , I got 5 rolls. I was pretty happy with the mix, no BU's though. Extremely fast shipping. Eighth seller is http://myworld.ebay.com/helenam36 , I only got 2 rolls from him, fast shipping, no BU's. Ninth seller is billiec310 again, these are his NY State Bridge Authority rolls, decent mix, got my first 21-S out of his rolls, 58 total BU cents. Purchased 10 rolls for 5.99 each. These are advertised as common rolls but look at the count, they are far from it. Tenth seller is moorcards again, very slow shipping as usual, 36 rolls made up this batch. Eleventh seller is billiec310 again, this is a bag of 5000. This bag had 31-S, 95% 30's and lower, plenty of AU cents. Billie stays on top as my favorite seller. I have been buying from him for over a year now and have not been disappointed once. Sometimes at night he will put buy it nows up that are some great deals. He regularly has memorial rolls up, tail tail rolls, and some others. Feel free to add to this topic, I am sure I am not the only one who is still looking for the treasure in "unsearched" wheat lots! Now this is really not a fair shootout because I am not buying the same amount of rolls from each seller, it does give an ideal of what is in each roll. I understand some people think this is like throwing money in the river, I am ok with that just don't repeat it over and over we get the point. I do this for amusement and to spend time with my children on rainy days. I also understand that I could have bought a complete set of Lincolns with what I have spent here, again I am ok with that. Disclaimer: I am in no way suggesting anybody buy from any of the the sellers I have posted here. Your experience may differ from what mine was. This is not meant to be a recommendation to buy or sell anything. Edited by chrsb 05/31/2008 8:54 pm

I always figured that someone searched the rolls. I can't for the life of me figure someone is going to let those key wheat dates go so cheap.

I have bought a few rolls now and then and get some okay coins but never anything with a key or semi key date. I have looked at stuff from billiec310 before but always wondered how he could get so much for his rolls. After looking at your break down, he seems to be the most honest person I have seen for truely unsearched rolls, because there is no way I would let a fair amount of those go. I could see 1 or 2 being put in there to get people buying, but it looks like you could do a really nice set off of one of those 5000 count bags.

The totals for Billie do not include anything from the 5000, those are just from 6 rolls-300 coins. I will post the count from the 5000 later, it had 98% 30's and below and was a nice haul.

I would like to know how much one oof those bags cost. I'm sick and tired of buyinf CULLS, SWORNTO BE UN SEARCHED, ETC, ETC! I AM TIRED IF THE BS! I don't mind paying a little more for my coins, but I'd like to get a fair shake, as well! After several thousand CULLS, I quit buying wheats, at any price, or amount. I'm not "tee'd-off, or anything llike that, I just don't like being HAD! Maybe this gut is one of the few left in the world. I might give it one more shot. Sorry about griping, but one does get fed-up. Dick

Dick,
I paid a premium for the bag, I did not lose money on it, but it wasn't a great treasure find (key dates) I did pull BU teens, twenties, and thirties out of it though. I got almost a half roll of vg-ef VDB's out of it too. They are selling for $850 right now, which is only $8.50 a roll which is not bad at all. Take a look at moorcards auctions, if you email him he will give second chance offers if you lose in the last few minutes. I noticed he upped his starting bid on the rolls to 49 per 6, which I would still pay, just not much more. He does have quit the following, check out the feedback, there are many repeat buyers, a couple are some serious wheat buyers who I frequently bid against (it is kind of sad I know a lot of the bidders on wheat rolls).
I know some look at this as a waste of money, I could have bought most of the key dates for what I pay for these rolls, the thing is I already own all of them. I enjoy spending the time with my children searching the rolls, building my circulated roll set, and of course the thrill of the hunt! The money I spend on these rolls I look at as lottery money, except instead of loosing all of it I still have face value in the end. I also throw back a lot of 40's and 50's, who knows maybe some young child will find it and spark interest in him to collect coins.

"Unsearched" my foot !........I can't believe ebay sellers claiming this......just can't !...... somebody has searched them. "If it sounds to good to be true......it probably is" >>>>>>> Garage sales, estate sales, estate auctions.........these places are much more likely to find true "unsearched Wheaties".

chrsb, thank you for the info. I haven't bought any wheats in over a year, so I was surprised at the "going rate"! I think I'll pass on this idea! A bit out of my league. I appreciate your time and nifo, howaever. More than likely, I would end up with a lot more rolls of the same dates, and still have the empty holes in the folserd. Probably be cheaper to buy "that" coin, rather than "them" coins! The coins I collect today are for my pleasure, "today", as I might not be here tomorrow, so I enjoy while I can. I'm still a kid at heart, (and my wife says I act like it sometimes, too). That is a privelige I reserve for myself, for not having had much chance to "act like a kid", when I was one. Dick

Is the going rate really $8 and up per roll of 50 wheat cents?! That works out to more than $.16 per coin, which sounds crazy to me. I just bought two deals from a seller I contacted through ebay, the first was 63 rolls for which I paid $3.50 each, these were loaded with mintmarked coins from the 1940s and a handful of earlier dates. I went back to him and bought another 129 rolls for $1.50 each. They might have been picked through for key dates, but I know they've not been searched for varieties, so I'm thinking I can still make a little money on them. So what is it about the rolls you're buying that makes them worth $8-$10 each, other than the promise of the seller that they are unsearched? Sean Reynolds

BU stands for Brilliant Uncirculated.
The only stupid question, is the one not asked.

I bought a few rolls from a seller not mentioned yet. I tried the ones originally posted, but I suppose everyone read the thread... I couldn't get a break on the bidding. They are apparently running up real high now. I paid about 11-12 per roll, after shipping. Anyway, the name is ryan_fowler Has anyone bought some of his stuff? He posted what was showing on each end of the roll. I am a little dubious that he doesn't say when the coins were rolled, and I don't even think he mentioned them as unsearched. I guess we'll see. I'll post what I get out of my 3 rolls. http://cgi6.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/...K:MEWN:MESOIDave Edit: Sorry... I see his name at the bottom of the original post. DOH! Missed it. I'll still post what I get.

Ratio- I had bought a batch from Ryan and it was duds, he emailed me saying he had a new batch of wheats and that is what I posted here. I got another batch from Moorecards and it was mostly 40-50's with a few decent ones-a 22d cleaned, 16-S and a few in the 30's with mint marks (can't remember, I need to inventory them). I often wonder if people "load" the first batch that goes out and hope people leave feedback with what was in the rolls. That would be great if you post what you get, and if anymore people have recently bought rolls, post what you get. I tried not to show favoritism with my initial post, thats why I post exactly what I got. I started back on nights this week so my motivation to do anything will drop drastically, I will try and get some more buys listed here, I got 2 more sellers to post, nothing really worth writing about but figured I would post what I got. Seang, What makes one sellers rolls more desirable over others is the quality of what is in each roll. In the past I have bought rolls that had all 40-50's and not a single mint mark, or even if they did have some in the teen-30's there were no mint marks and were worn so bad I needed my microscope to tell what the date was. I buy these rolls for entertainment purposes. Disclaimer: I am in no way suggesting anybody buy from any of the the sellers I have posted here. Your experience may differ from what mine was. This is not meant to be a recommendation to buy or sell anything.

Thanks Sean. I hope I get some of those "loaded" rolls! Anyway, I will post what I get out of these 150 wheats... or at least a detailed summary. I agree that all coins have been searched by someone. I was searching my cents last night while thinking about how easy I could word an auction to make it sound like I never searched them! I have been watching your top rated sellers, but it seems as though their prices have gone up recently, and probably won't be coming back down soon. I guess you get what you pay for. Thanks for the info! Dave
