Going through my inherited Grandfather's coin collection I found this penny. Looking at it through a loop on the right ear there appears to be part of the rim had came off and was stamped in. Is this a die cud? Die break? Thoughts on how this could have happened please.

Looks like a die crack from where I'm sitting or some type of Retained Interior Die Break.

CUD's always include the rim. Use the search box, upper left of page there is good info there.

Looks like the die actually chipped away them lines are so thick.
My biggest fear is that when I die my wife will sell all my coins for what I told her I paid for them.

Working on Whitman Large Cent date set album 1793-1857 (57 holes filled of 64 total) now come the "toughies" - yikes!

Thank you all so much for your input! I've got quite a few pretty cool coins from my grandpa.
