@CM, there are a bunch of threads on CCF talking about how proof coins end up in circulation. Here is one: http://goccf.com/t/281755Nice pick-up, by the way!

People that break up Proof coin sets sometimes throw their "crap" coins back into circulation!
Having a sense of humor is the greatest thing God gave you! Have fun using it! Working on Whitman Large Cent date set album 1793-1857 (56 holes filled of 64 total) now come the "toughies" - yikes!

That was no slap at you cookiemonster, or at your coin. It was a statement of the opinion of the person hat spent the coin towards it. To them it wasn't worth enough to justify keeping or protecting it, THEY saw it as "crap". Most all of us have something we consider to be so common and of such low value that it isn't worth fooling with.

my ten cents:
i agree with that. I don’t think that statement was meant as a sleight in any way.
most of the ppl posting here have at least some idea of the value of a proof coin, penny dime nickel quarter half or other, and to those ppl it is worth holding. those ppl breaking up proof sets and getting any coin from it into circulation— via a bank, or coinstar, or a handout to a less-fortunate individual who might be financially strapped or residentially challenged, or just plain spending it on a jawbreaker— don’t see that value as many of us would. to them it’s just another dime on the way to a full dollar. their regard toward the coin is not significant as it pertains to collecting, it’s significance is that it’s just more coin on the pile (toward whatever end). so their regard toward the coin is no different than as if they did regard it as ‘crap’.
can I babble more? ...yes I can!
nice pickup! a little jealous here, actually.. I don’t think i’ve ever scored a proof coin in change, or a roll. please post ‘em as you find ‘em, crap or not.
keep on searching! good eyes find good prizes. you found a nice little prize. say, that’s a swell idea for a new thread topic: post your found proofs/NIFCs. (or has that already been done?)
btw, I really enjoy being at this forum. thanks to all of you for your knowledge, understanding and patience with the newbies, as I am still one of them.

I love finding proofs in the wild :D My first ever was a silver Georgia proof quarter that I couldn't even figure out why I had gotten a silver state quarter in my change. I've always seen the darker side of people I guess and assumed the proofs I find are from sets people stole and then spent as change.

What he was trying to say is people spend proof coins in circulation, thinking they are "crap" coins to them. Some people don't highly value proof coins and spend them. You highly misconstrued Mark's comment.
