During a recent post, I showed a 1979 Lincoln cent that I believe has remnants of an S over a D. After reading through several expert sites, this shows to be possible when mintmarks were added to the working dies. The dot, for the notorious 1979 die showed a deteriorating mintmark, but what if it was punched over with an S? From what I understand, mintmarks were not part of the master until the 90's and were hand punched into the working die.
I have created overlay pictures to show the perfect match of a horizontal S over deteriorating D.
Hopefully I can change some minds and show that this coin is a possibility. The pictures line up perfectly!

Sorry, it looks like damage to me.

They didn't use that S mintmark style in 1979. http://www.varietyvista.com/01b%20L...20Styles.htm

Correct me if I'm wrong but if there was an S in that die first, it would be a proof die, and that would have a noticeable difference from a normal die.

Although it is PMD, hits on dates and mm are always tough to identify.
