Can't figure out why it has such a granular appearance.

In this condition with the granularity, it is impossible to say if it was, or is Maundy,
and I have about 15 Maundy coins.
In pristine (gem) condition, the currency threepences are valued at more than the Maundy coins in the same condition.
The reason for that is due to the fact that the Maundy coins were kept as heirlooms, and all of the curency threepences saw heavy circulation, survivors in gem condition thus very rare.
They can be distinguished apart by the fact that the Maundy coins have a sharper strike, (fewer coins came off the dies, and are often DMPL, like Morgans).
VF (British grading), but I am not keen on the granularity.
