There is NO value difference between the large and small dates, it was a master die change in mid/fall to the smaller size due to catastrophic failures of the older dies to last out the year. These are called transitional changes is all. Now, there was ONE (just one!) copper small date Denver D mint found last year. This is quite the anamoly after 35 years, and I still question its veracity even after being slabbed. No others in 35 years? Most likely a one planchet fluke, not multiple errors. The value difference is between the metallic content of copper or zinc.

The difference is as the name implies. One is larger then the other. Look at a few 1982's and you'll pick it up right away. Always weigh your small date 1982-D's. When you find one around 3.11 grams, as opposed to 2.5, you will have found an extremely valuable coin.

The easiest way to tell at a glance is to look at the 2 in 1982. On the large date it is nice and staight and a bit thicker and on the small date it has a slight bend in lower portion of the 2 where it meets the lower crossbar if that makes sense. Look at some reference pictures and you will see exactly what I mean. And I don't think many people weigh every 1982 d small date they come across and that's why one never came up until recently, but that is the sure way to tell if it's copper

The value differences extreme. If it's in 1982 D large date made of copper it's worth about one cent. If it's in 1982 D small date made of copper there is currently only one known and it's worth in excess of $20,000. You know how to tell if it's copper from the weight, and the links posted above will tell you how to tell the large state from the small date. Good luck but don't hold your breath.

The best
way to tell the difference between Sm and Lg is to look at the distance of the "2" from the edge of the penny. You will find that the Sm date '2" is further away from the penny's edge than the Lg.date "2".

The differences are not just the date. All the devices are different sizes:
