It's not red in color it's more silvery/goldish..

Direct contact burial in damp soil could very well be the cause for such an appearance.

To CCF! That's Environmental Damage going on with your Nickel. It's not an Improperly Annealed Planchet. This is Post Strike Damage (it happened after it left the U.S. Mint).
