Found this in my penny jar. Any thoughts? I'm just learning about coin collection and have not seen one like this in my limited research. Has anyone else?

I see what you are talking about. Looks like a bad case of Die Deterioration but seeing the rest of the details look normal I don't know for sure.

Looks more like damage to the coin than any other issue with the die.

I'm thinking that it's the very early start of a Dryer Coin, which is a form of Post Strike Damage (happened after it left the U.S. Mint). See how the date is flat and mushy? I think that it's a Dryer Coin.
