I am not a serious collector but I bought the 1995 proof set of American eagles just for fun in 1995. Now I find out that the silver proof is a key date coin. My question is, what to do with my set. Some have said to split it up, sell of the gold coins and collect an entire set of the proof silver eagles. (I have about 10 other proof dates already). Others say keep the set intact and sell it if I want the money. Others say just hold on to it and wait. I have never had it look at by any type of grading service. The coins are in their mint holders and I'm worried after reading some other sites that the silver coin could "spot". I would welcome some professional collectors opinions.

Congrads coin the coin. Your coin may or may not spot. I'd say that if it isn't spotting now, leave it alone. I don't think spotting was a problem for this year like it was for the past few years of the silver eagles.

I thought that the eagles started in 1987, how is 1995 10 years?

I thought they started in 1986?

If so, 1995 would have been the tenth year produced. I would not call it a "10th anniversary" until that year ended, just like your first birthday comes at the end of your first year alive and the beginning of your second.

You did really good on that one- you essentially paid for the gold coins and got a $4000 bonus in the SAE
If you want to collect a complete set of proof SAEs, there is no reason to break the set and sell off the gold coins unless you need the money to fund other purchases. Look at it this way, you already own the toughest one and one that most people will never own- the rest is easy with just a few proofs over $100.

What I would do... my method of collecting, others
may vary... I would keep the set completely in tact.
All mint packaging and papers. Then I would collect
the rest of the set... UNC, Proof, R-proof, etc...
The WHOLE set!

The way I see mint packaging is like NRFB to other
collectors. It may not be a boost to value now.
But one day it will. Without question. This is
precisely why graders are beginning to grade GSA
Morgans in the mint slab. I think I have even seen
some other high end mint products with grade labels,
as opposed to being broken out.

Good luck! Enjoy the hobby, and welcome!
