Hello Everyone,

Any opinions on which Modern Issue Proof and Mint Sets will go up in value over the next few years after the 50 State Quarters program comes to an end and why? Which Proof Sets and Mint Sets have the most upward potential?

If we concentrate on pre-state quarter sets and non-silver sets, that makes things a little clearer...

I think the big flaw in collecting mint or proof sets was the idea that it was important to have the SETS. Time has shown this to not really be the case (most of the time).

One other problem with mint/proof sets is that there are "problem" or less than perfect coins in these sets. So there are "bad" ones, "ok" ones and "really nice" ones. GUESS which ones are for sale on e-bay and at your local dealer? (at least at prices that match gray sheet).

The one positive thing to say is that the price can't get much lower :) You can get some mint sets that have $3.83 face value of Uncirculated coins for $6!! Ya gotta believe they'll go up - how much is anyone's guess....

Ooooops. The crystal ball just fell off the table......

Thousands of sets have been opened to have all the coins either graded, sold, used for albums, or stolen and cashed in at Coinstar

If there were real mintage figures then certain sets would be worth 10x what is listed in the RedBook or what the going prices on ebay are

It's kinda like the value of some Morgans that we have No idea how many were actually melted down or left in vaults for decades. Whenever treasure ships are found the coins inside change the value instantly sometimes of current coins thought to be scarce.

Alas we shall never know

My take is:
The late mint stuff, 60s until the State Quarters,
is so cheap, you can't afford not to collect it.

My opinion.

I have to agree with ratio411. This is the way I approached mint sets, but I did go through till present. Now I am working on Proofs in the same fashion. Find a dealer who has competitive prices and who will let you look through the sets, if possible. Happy Hunting!!

My dealer has mint and proof sets so cheap it's digusting. He takes them in everyday, piles and piles of them. Just last week I was in there and a guy was selling his, a range of 70's and 80's.....from what I over-heard, he paid the guy $4.25 each. Going up in value? Not in our lifetimes apparently.

The best thing for these is to break them up and send out for grading or individual sale. They seem to have a lot more value that way than as a set....I dunno....it's crazy.

I think people would be surprised if they knew how few of these are left. A lot of the coins in them represent the only source for that date. The sets that have been destroyed are not sitting around in albums or PCGS holders for the most part, they have been spent and are the VF and XF coins you see in circulation. It's gotten to the point that that many if not most of the VF early date clads in circulation are coins that have been pulled from mint sets in more recent years.

I would certainly agree that the superior sets will do the best and some of the dates that are cheap will have good percentage gains. There may be a little play in some of the sets that come nice as well like the '72.

Eventually the demand for the coins in these sets will exceed the number of sets. With most of the sets already being destroyed and most of those surviving being unavailable because the owner just has them sitting in a box in the garage and knows nothing about coins, it just won't take much demand to stand this market on its ear. While many people will tell you that this demand will never materialize I would point out that there are tens times this number of people filling the '65 to '98 folders with coins from circulation and that there are 1000 times this high number filling folders and albums with the states clad quarters from circulation.

I think there's no real doubt that the demand will be there and that it will sneak up so stealthily that people won't recognize it even after it pounces.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.
