1882 Shield & 1941 Mercury (Both Au?)

kyleg02247 Valued Member United States 84 Posts	Posted 10/18/2018 4:22 pm Hey can someone help me out where I might be missing on the grading. I believed both of these coins to be Uncirculated, however after just getting them back from PCGS they both came back as AU. Can a Mercury dime have Full bands and still be considered not uncirculated? Find it hard to believe seeing as how the center bands are the highest point on the coin. Report this Post to the Staff

The merc looks ms and fsb but if you look at the center bands of the faces, the center band and lower bands look rubbed. The Shield nickel looks to have broken and minimal luster. I can see them as high au's and the merc is closer to ms than the shield. The graders aren't perfect, but it doesn't look to be an outrageous disgrace. T-BOP Rest in Peace United States 18456 Posts	Posted 10/18/2018 6:40 pm At first sight the Merc looked MS fsb to me . But as NS points out the middle and lower bands do seem to be rubbed . Which I'm sure has nothing to do with the FB designation but only with the grade of the coin . Still and all ,that's real scrutiny on PCGS's part . Not sure if I would have agreed . Coinfrog Bedrock of the Community United States 94367 Posts	Posted 10/18/2018 7:05 pm Other than strike considerations, I see no wear whatsoever on the Merc with its booming luster - no less than 64, and I'll say FSB. I lean toward AU-58 on the Shield for no reason than the lifeless-looking reverse, which may be a misleading photo. Report this Post to the Staff
