echizento Moderator United States 23731 Posts	Posted 07/31/2008 10:17 pm These are Byzantine Trachy (cup coins) from the 11th-13th centuries. #1 looks like an gold Hyperpyron of Theodore II (Ducas-Lascaris) 1254-1258. The IC-XC is Greek for Jesus Christ. These coins can really be difficult to identify, so this is as close as I can get with the image. #2 I'll have to do so research on this one. echizento Moderator United States 23731 Posts	Posted 08/01/2008 08:47 am OK I think I found the second coin. It is a Billon Trachy of the Latin Rulers @ 1204-1224 from the Thessalonica mint. St Helena and St. Constantine holding patriarchal cross between then. The obverse should be christ seated IC-XC. SEAR# 2057. These coins are mostly bronze with a silver wash which is usually worn away. As to cleaning leave the coin as it is, don't try and shine it. Welcome to the group.
