I picked this one up today, from a fellow CCF member, and love it. The photos really don't do this coin any favours - it has incredible eye-appeal in hand...

Depending on the reverse ms-65/66 Rd or R&B, I would personally go for ms-66 Red. it looks amazing, I need somme red large cents !

No doubt that it's a MS66 Red in my mind. Judging by the picture that obverse is probably bright as can be other then the few carbon spots.

Agree it's one of the top pops. Beauty. Why don't I see an H on the PCGS coin in this link?

Something like this is really too high end to have a catalogue value as it's probably top population or close to top. I haven't looked up the population report but there probably wouldn't be more then a dozen of these through out all TPGs. Market value I'm guessing is probably 1400-1900CAD depends on how you are buying it(auction vs private), who are you buying it from etc. Also not all MS66 Red's would be equal this one has some great eye appeal. When it comes down to coins that are top population there are few buyers and few for sale so prices can vary in range quite a bit.

A good number of these came out of the Heaton Hoard, so it is one of the years that you can get a nice red coin for a very reasonable price (ideal type set coin). Speaking of which, I now have to find a home for the coin that this one replaced, a nice PCGS MS65RB...

The Charlton guide says that 1872 & 1876 Royal Mint strikes have no H mint mark. I did not know this before I just looked it up.

Very nice coin, SPP.

All 1872 and 1876 circulating NF cents have H mint marks. In 1872 it is sometimes quite weakly struck.
