Hi there everyone! I hope all is well with whoever is reading this. And now for my conundrum that I am hoping I can get help with here. My wife and I's grandfather left a rather large coin collection. During the Korean war he was stationed in Turkey and during his stay there, farmers in the local village on occasion would dig up coins. He offered them American money for the coins by the pound. He would wrap them up in socks and bring them home. We now have the collection of coins. We have pulled out a small sample of them and think we have separated them by Greek, Roman and Byzantine eras. The total collection has to be well over a thousand coins. We don't know what to do really. I need some good advice.

Sort them and provide pictures of your sorted groups and/or individual coins.

@ausmodius, that is an interesting problem to have! I do hope that those are not fakes, but we really need pictures to get a sense of what you have.

To add to @rayder's comments, take good pictures of 2 or 3 of the BEST (in the best condition) of each category-both sides, and give us the weight and dimensions of each one.

If you can see any that look like silver, take a picture of one or 2 as well. I am assuming that there is no gold here.

That will get us a good sense of the kind of collection you have.

The last thing you want to do is make a quick sale. What you might end up doing is paying a knowledgable person for an appraisal-and identify the really valuable ones, if any. If you tell us the part of the country you are in, we might be able to recommend someone.

Depending on where you live, that could be easy or difficult.

Remember, just because they are ancient coins does not make them valuable.

I have a bunch of pictures of the small sample I took. But the pictures are above the 300kb rule. Should post them at like imgur and send link?

Here is a quick little sample. We belive the first coin to be silver. And other coins to be from the Byzantine empire. I don't have weights tho. Looks like I have a lot of cataloging to do.
