I ordered two proof sets. The main coins looked fine. One W Lincoln Cent was very nice. The other had splotches on it. Three on the obverse, one on the reverse. I have sent the set back for a new one. Has anyone else noticed the W Lincoln Cent with problems?

New to forum been collecting off and on the past 50 years. Got my two 2019-s proof sets today and the two 2019-W cents looked pitiful. Let the mint know about it too. I would send them back but I might get two back worse then these two. Will wait a year or so and should be able to pick some up in the coin shops cheep.

I didn't get one, but I know someone who bought 6. They all arrived spotted an scratched from improper packaging. If they are all like this the PR70 will be stupid expensive.

I just wait for dealers to get some. Then pay a bit more at a coin show but get ones that are perfect.

Just wanted to say I read this forum everyday and think you guys are great. I thought some people might be interested in the reply I got back from the mint today for the messed up 2019-w cents I received yesterday.
"Unfortunately, the United States Mint will not be issuing exchange replacements for the premium penny. It is a complimentary item for which you incurred no cost".
I would enclose pictures of my 2019-w cents but I broke my cell phone two days ago. Kind of nice not getting those robocalls. Thanks for all your info in this hobby.

Interesting but not surprising. Thanks for the intel. I'll try to post pictures of mine when they come in. Still have yet to check the mail today.

Low Quality Control + Low Mintage + Poor Conditions = Expensive and Rare PR70RD Examples.

Yeah, I have no problem with the Mint not accepting returns for this cent, and I agree with GrapeCollects.- the PR70s are going to be high dollar.

I wasn't expecting much when I saw they were shipping the "Premium" proof W penny/cent in a body bag. Still the mint managed to disappoint. The W proof cent deserved to be a properly handled and packaged copper coin.

with nfine. It's sad to see it. A friend recived his today, had a deep scratch running across the obverse, it exposed the zinc. That proof won't exist for that much longer

What are they possibly doing to these coins to make them so bad? The mint makes billions of these things and for the most part they all turn out fine.

I'm not sure. They are basically shipping them in ziplocks.

Sounds like "growing pains" producing proof copper cents at WP. First thing that comes to mind is that they are not using a copper wash that's inert, but then are they making the planchets there or getting them elsewhere? So what else could be at fault? Either dies that have a polish/finish that is reacting with the copper or packaging that is reacting. Then the other factor would be the air quality at the facility, a bunch of heavy smokers would probably ruin them. Assuming they get tired of getting complaints, it would seem the issue(s) would be fixed later in production.

They get the planchets from an outside vender. The mint no longer makes their own cent planchets.
