Is this an error on a 1944 copper penny or environmental damage?
It looks like an error on both sides to me but I'm no expert and want to be certain. I appreciate any help. Thx

To CCF! Just a heavily damaged coin with Post Strike Damage ( PSD) unfortunately. The damage happened after it left the U.S. Mint.

Circulation damage. Environmental damage term is used for ground finds, like with a metal detector or coins from a fountain kind of thing.

Any hand tools could damage a coin.
