I like Franklin half dollars. So, I collected one album of circulated coins and now I'm going for the uncirculated and proofs. I'd like to collect the 1958 and 1959 business strike type 1 and type 2 varieties. I completed getting the 1958 ones, where I read the type 2 is more rare. I don't have the 1959 ones yet. I read it should be about 50% type 1 and 50% type 2. A lot of times on ebay, I see people don't distinguish between the two types. However, when they do list the type, it seems there is a high premium being placed on the type 2 for 1959. Why is that? If it's 50/50 there shouldn't be much of a premium. Are they just trying to dupe noobs like me? Also, for the 1960-1963 ones, it looks like I can get them in original cello cheaper than without. Is that the way to go? Thanks.

I didn't know there were two varieties of those. My Albums of that coin don't show places for those varieties.

I put my collection in CAPS albums. I buy it with blank pages so I can print on it whatever I want to collect. You can get blank pages without buying the plastic at valleycoins.

On business strikes, some Franklins were struck with a proof like die in the reverse. This is the type 2. It only happened in the 1958P and 1959P business strikes. They are not that rare, however I consider it a separate coin to collect.

It also happened in the 1956P proof. There the type 1 is somewhat rare. Previous to 1956, the proofs are all type 1. After 1956, the proofs are all type 2. During 1956 they can be either.

Good choice!

There are so many sorta-recognized varieties that if you want to collect them all* you have to customize your album to your needs.

*all - only definable by you.
