That token has a similar style to a Civil War token but Civil War Tokens were larger and dated. Hard Tiimes Tokens were considerably earlier. I think it's a transportation token from the late 1800s. Being a transportation token from New York, I doubt it's rare. Still quite cool and in decent shape.

Another general rule:
Patriotic tokens {Civil War) are , well, patriotic - flags, presidents and such.
Hard Times tokens are strictly commercial. Good for $$$ in trade.
Brother, can you spare a "BARBER" dime?

Interesting - the token mentions steam boats.
Before the era of trains?
Boats went all the way west to
the Great Lakes.
NYC to Albany was a short hop!

This token is listed in U.S. Civil War Store Cards (Fuld, 3rd Ed Ostendorf, Editor) under New York City. Here is the entry-

Not entirely. My favorite HTTs are political / satirical. Although, all were used as currency to some extent.
