An "Automat" was a fast-food store, where all the food was served via vending machine. Very popular in America and Europe in the early 20th century, apparently.

Just noticed it has what looks like a lamination issue.

They were for cafeterias that were from vending machines as mentioned above.

They were used so that all cash exchanges went through one register.

They became popular in the mid 1930's.

Chicago was a hot spot for those cafeterias. Many were "space age" futuristic designs with straight lines only in the architecture.
