An 1813 Bust Half was marked as Fine condition, and sold to me for $24. It has a small hole next to the date. Sadly, I don't have a way to get a picture up right now. I usually don't like holed coins, but for some reason I really liked this one. Do you think I got my money's worth, numismatically?

Without a picture its hard to say, but I purchases an 1814 with a hole and a drill mark for $19, in fine, cleaned, and I thought I got lots of bang for my buck.

I would urge you not to put your hard earned money into any coin with a hole in it. Wait for something nice.

I disagree about "waiting for something nice". That's investment advice, not collecting advice.
You said "for some reason I really liked this one". THAT is the barometer. Of course, I assume you can afford the $24 and will be able to feed the family tonight!
It's also true that the hole will hold the resale value down - but if that's not a problem... BTW I think that's a great price for that - a G4 goes for 2-3 times what you paid. And you have one that has a story to tell!

Think about it, you paid $24 bucks for a piece of history that maybe a soldier during the war of 1812 drilled a hole through and put it on a leather thong before he went into the battle of New Orleans, etc. There is soooo much history in that little piece. Well worth the price of a Jackson and a few Washingtons

Can you sell it for $24? I'd be willing to bet Yes. So if you didn't lose money and you're approaching this from a collectors standpoint then I'd say you did great.
From an investors standpoint... Is it going to appreciate in value? From a historical standpoint coins aren't all that great of an investment vehicle. Coins as investments are better suited for those who "need" more diversificaton than stocks / bonds / cash and cash equivalents.

I myself wouldn't buy it, but I can't blame you. At that price, there's really no reason not to if you like it.

Thanks for the great replies! I'm not looking to invest, I'm just looking for a great looking type set.  Also, I have fun tracking values and looking for good deals. I know I will replace it eventually with a non-holed specimen, but for right now I was very excited to acquire my first Half Bust! |

You'll find that some collectors are more laid back, educated, and easy-going than other 'Investor collector' types...
Enjoyment and study of a single unique piece can lead to vastly more enlightenment than what one can with an entire collection.
