Found this one a while ago but I forgot to ask if it would ever straight grade with the junk on the reverse. Opinions?

Do you think that's some kind of foreign substance on the reverse? Have you tried an acetone soak?

I think acetone is a good place to start. It kinda looks like glue residue.

I don't have acetone. It looks like some kind of residue?

Buy acetone at any hardware store. That apparent residue might well come off. Just soak the coin, perhaps overnight, in a covered dish. Don't scrub it! If it doesn't come off, I doubt the coin will straight grade.

The glue residue will come off with Acetone. The scratch will be the big problem. It will "details" the grade.

If you buy acetone make sure it's 100% pure, not nail polish remover

Could you provide a closeup of the specific region supporting the alleged DDO?

@mp, it's FS-101. You can see a spread on the left arrowhead.

It's worth keeping as a DD but I very much doubt that would pass at most TPG.

Even if the stuff comes off, it looks like there some kind of cut or scratch on the obverse...

There is a LOT of DD on that little beast.

If it were a 100 year newer Lincoln it would be a high priced coin.

I may have to keep an eye out for one.

I really don't think it would pass the muster as a straight grade at a top tier TPG only due to the deep cut on the obverse through the shield. THat's enough to be a detail damage or grafitti. I do think the acetone would improve it, I put all my Two Cent Pieces through an acetone rinse just to remove potential hiding PVC residue that could continue to etch the coin in the future, in your case I'd bet it would also remove the gunk on the reverse, too. I do find when removing glue residue though often the coin is very different colored underneath the old residue and sometimes it even looks worse. Not much one can do about that other than ahit it with Deller's Darkener (but I don't do that myself, I just hope they will mellow over the next few decades now that I've conserved them.

I just found my lowest grade 2C DDO a couple weeks ago, at least as worn as this one, always a cool find! I'm not even sure how many I have now, but I'd think it's around 20 or so.
