CRH was good tonight as it netted me a 2019 D LSC Doubled ear cent. Glad to add this one to the collection.

Nice find! E&V, I appreciate the kind gesture, but I believe this is a different one. This one is not as strong as the one I found.

CH, I think it's a different stage from possibly the same die. I have 7 2015 D DDO-001's and not all are the same, same placement but different strengths of the doubling.

Jim, the 2015 D ear DDO you sent me I think it's in a different stage, since the doubling is mushier and harder to see.

I can't see it in the pic provided, too much glare on that side of the ear. I'd really like to see a better pic.

I have a Question about the New Finds. I have found them in the 2015 D the 2018 D and also the 2019 D... My question is, they are being listed different how's this? The one Wexler has seen had been said to be listed as a Double ( Ear ) variety. The 2015 D I sent in was listed as a New Listing By MR Wiles as a Double ( Earlobe ). But the coins look the SAME. So what are we to call it DDO Ear or Earlobe Doubling. Also how would it be listed if sent in for grading?

A bit of ambiguity in the question(s), but in general I think doubled ear equals doubled earlobe for this stuff as it's all in the same area.

As for grading, any such things would almost have to go to ANACS, but they really do a nice job and will put things like "Discovery PC" on the slab.

ANACS, to me, just always seems more inclined to take varieties seriously, and special coins like discovery pieces worth putting on a label. I have little experience with NGS but as far as PCGS is concerned they just do too much business to get slowed down trying to verify anything but the varieties with and FS number plus a couple others.

FYI, one of the members in my local coin club recently took the level 2 grading course. A top grader from PCGS was there, and shared with the class that he averages about 8 seconds to grade and coin and move on to the next one. Hardly time to even see the die state, let alone verify a variety attribution. And, a pretty good reason to re-submit a coin that gets undergraded since it wasn't really looked at hard in the first place.

Another anecdotal bit comes to me from a retired PCGS grader. He was somewhat emphatic that PCGS just doesn't want those kinds of coins, but never really said why.

Hope this helps to understand things.

Thanks John for posting as I wasn't aware of this one yet.

Thanks for sharing those morsels TB.
Always good to hear the train of thought and practices on some of the coins coming out of the grading companies.

Tropicalbats: Thanks for the help. Good to know. So it kind of looks like they are a little Snobbish and only want to put there name on the good stuff, The ones that are good enough for Auctions and RICH collectors. It's kind of like shopping at Walmart or going to Macy's lol but the stuff in made in the same factory or shall I say US Mint's lol.
