When going through lots of coins, is it better to cull the piles, or look at each coin? If culling is appropriate, what factors decides the coin is not worth the time?

It all depends on what your looking for. High grades, Errors, Mint marks, Some hunt just for the copper coins only. What are you looking for. If your looking for Errors ya need to check all the coins. Looking for coins to go in a albums well ya need to look at them all to see the Dates. ITS UP TO YOU.

All depends how you define Culls . To me a cull is a very bad damaged coin . Bent ,heavy scratch ,corroded ,mutilated ,etc. These for me are not collector coins unless they are a rare coin .So culls go into a separate box far away from my other coins .

On circulation coins, If the coin look dark, scratched, stained extremely or has a deep mark on it, I toss them into the back into circulation rolls. I always ask myself: "Would I buy this coin." if not, it goes away without even looking at it.
Why waste my time of face value coins, if someone would not want to buy it?

Thank you all for the responses.

Since I've joined this chat room I've changed the ways I coin collect. I actually have several pounds of pennies from pre-1983 simply because of the copper value. But now I'm seeing the value of keeping them ALL isn't worth it. I'm definitely starting to follow Coop's view on culling.

I've also realized that I really do not like looking at dimes...
