Anybody know of any Canadian banks that will give out pennies? My bank (Scotiabank) told me they still accept pennies but are not allowed to give them out.

None of the banks in Canada are allowed to let the cents go back out once they have them.

JBU, here in the States, you walk into a bank with 25$, and you exchange your dollars for a box of 50 rolls of cents (or any amount you wish).
I wasn't aware Banks in Canada weren't allowed to hand out cents any longer. I know the mint stopped producing cents in 2012, but I thought they were radially still available. Good thing I brought 50$ or so worth of pennies with me when I moved down here.

Ya, I always thought that pennies were the most fun to collect, obviously least expensive, but always a good variety of stuff to find. I did buy a box of Canadian pennies from the west coast a few years ago, was expensive, but it actually wasn't all that much of a discovery - not many varieties on the first sort through. Takes a long time to get technical and sort through the specific modern collections which I haven't fully completed yet. But nonetheless the diademe monarch period has some interesting varieties among others...

Was thinking of opening a bank account in Buffalo so that I could obtain some banker's boxes of US coins. I tried a few years ago at a US bank but they gave me a hassle because I didn't have an account. Anybody recommend a particular bank in Buffalo, hopefully one that has many locations, easy to deal with, no hassles...?

Are you a U.S. citizen? Do you have to be a U.S. citizen to open an account in the U.S.? ....probably not in today's environment!!

I'm thinking/wondering a lot of U.S. banks along the boarder probably have tons of Canadian coins!

I'm in a boarder city and I do have a bank account in the US and got it with no problem. I get rolls there and when I go through them I don't have to re-roll them, they have a coin counting machine.

So I could get a bank account in Canada without being a Canadian citizen?

At the risk of causing a crap storm I'm gonna say it anyway. If anyone can and wants to immigrate to the US I'd highly recommend it. Without getting into the politics the US is the only constitutionally free nation in the world. I'm going to leave it at that.

As for how the penny hunting is? Awesome. Granted the varieties and stuff in general we look for is different but once you learn the ropes it's a blast!

I am guessing they have x-ray cameras at the boarder crossing and can see your boxes of coins in the trunk. There is probably a limit as to how much coinage you can carry across the boarder both ways. (Friend was asked to back up his car a bit at the boarder, then asked what was in the trunk - he had some auto parts that he thinks they saw with an x-ray camera)

I also think that boarder towns must have lots of mixed currency in their bank coin rolls, that's why I'd like to open an account in Buffalo as I'm from the Greater Toronto Area. I'd like to pick up both currency in coin roll hunting. I got a box of pennies from Buffalo a couple years ago and there was some nice Canadian copper in there...
