Is the light cutting through the patina a bit? Mental calibration is telling me this is darker than the pics show.

That happens with this issue. I believe the pressures were too low to fill the obverse high points on the freshly cut dies. Most of the coins produced in 1916 were of very high quality but there are many that exhibit this flatness.

63+BN, the flatness, some tick-tacs and spotting, can't see any cartwheel spokes. Might be a 64 in hand if it cartwheels.

If I may make some suggestions.

1) Reduce your light and/or change the angle. The light is cutting through the patina.
2) Check your exposure rate, if you can. If your light is stuck how it is, try cutting ER back...then see 3.
3) Use a white background so the viewer has a reference point. When I know it's white, I can mentally calibrate for white balance if it's off.

I know black looks "sexy" but white is the best for coins IMO. It's all about telegraphing the photographic conditions to the end-viewer.
