I guess if you're going to go, go big. Not happy with producing a passable 1858 cent, this one was made with a whopper of a doubled die on the date. Fun one! 1858 Flying Eagle cent - counterfeit w/DDO 4.59g Edited by tropicalbats 03/06/2020 10:12 pm

Even though it's fake, I love the Doubled Die on the date!

Neat fake.
Hate to be a poindexter, but isn't it a RPD not a Doubled Die?

Well now, isn't that a jolly good question! Certainly on a real cent it would be a RPD, but since this isn't real then it could be that they were faking an impossible doubled die. That really looks DDO not RPD.

This is actually a pretty typical fake. The missing detail on the leaf on the back has been around for years.
Edit - someone just posted this same coin a few weeks ago on here. It seems more common to find the 1857 version of this fake though.

A date so nice that they faked it twice! Interesting!

My 1856 counterfeit is good enough that someone decided to get its metal content done up. Should be: 88% copper, 12% nickel Actual coin: 68.38% copper, 0.15% nickel, 31.23% zinc, 0.23% lead

I'm really curious as to why you (Tropicalbats) feel the Flying Eagle you posted is counterfeit? I've only been into the Error side of coins for a few years, so don't beat me up to bad,

A serious collector of FE cents will recognize this as counterfeit on one look. The date logo is comical. With respect, Google "1856 Flying Eagle cent Images". to the CCF!

Quote: I'm really curious as to why you (Tropicalbats) feel the Flying Eagle you posted is counterfeit? Which one do you mean, he has posted two different ones. (but as Coinfrog says the 1856 is easy to spot because the date is so bad. The 1858 is better but the date font still isn't right.

Quote: A serious collector of FE cents will recognize this as counterfeit on one look. Not even a serious collector. Me, one with only a few VF Flying Eagle cents, can recognize this fake at first glance. All it takes is repetitive expose to the type so you understand what a genuine coin looks like.
