Hello all,

I found this Indian Head cent, which I originally thought was an 1886. After further examination, I am torn between this being an 1886 or an 1896 with odd damage.

Any insight would be helpful. Thank you!

It's a 96 . Check other coins with a 9 as the 3rd diget .
That's the way they were designed to look .

No doubt a 9. That punch mark at the lower left of the nine likely pushed the tail up a bit.

Definitely a 9. Compare the waist to the 8 next to it.

In this case the 9 is clearly visible. Even if the 9 were not clearly visible, you could tell it is a 1896 by the position of the 1. It is right of the bottom of the neck. In the 1886 the 1 is farther to the left just past the bottom of the neck in the type 1 variety. Also the oval of the 9 is more elongated than an 8 would be.
