Hello everyone, I'm new to this world, and french so not particularly familiar with American coins... though I love them! I have an interesting purchase here from a french guy that told me he found it on his land with a metal detector. Here is the only picture he sent me. The weight seems incorrect but the scale doesn't look like it could be very precise... What do you guys think? Thanks a lot! EDIT Here's the other side of the coin. The "french guy" is lying. It is a counterfeit, a very common counterfeit. It looks a LOT like this counterfeit 1888-O, doesn't it?

http://goccf.com/t/373061#3199238darn... thanks for the reply! As I don't know anything about these I cannot tell what to look for either on the one I posted nor on the one you posted. What makes you say it is counterfeit?

Well, for one it should weigh about 2 3/4 more grams.

That's what I thought first too, but given the scale he's using I wouldn't count on accuracy, don't you think?
anything else that feels off?

The coin appears to be a counterfeit because of the following reasons: 1) underweight 2) Color/toning typical of a Chinese counterfeit. 3) Details on the coin are not sharp. 4) On reverse there appears to be some cast bumps, but photos are not good enough to confirm. 5) The coin does not look like a dirt find.

Thank you so much for the answers to my questions! I think I'll buy a couple in a coin shop first before trying my hand on internet sale... If anybody has one I'm looking for a 1888 Morgan dollar, it doesn't need to be minted!

Go to ebay USA and search for 1888 Morgan silver dollar in a NGC or PCGS holder from a reputable dealer that ships world wide. This will give you the best chance of getting a genuine example online. If you do want the plastic on the coin, when you get it crack it out. Click on the ebay link below to view an example from a dealer that ships to France. 283853423578
