Can somebody shed some light on this for me? Is it an error or just a banged up coin? I'm beginning to think a 4 yr degree is required to distinguish errors vs post mint damage.

It's not an error.
And calling it damage is being polite; it's WAY beyond that.
Describe it as if there were no picture.
Picture it as if there were no description.

Thanks bud..I was pretty sure that was the answer I was gonna get. But I then I see similar coins while browsing online and then think twice about it. So, I really appreciate your experience & insight.

PMD. There's a great book on errors that I use, The Official price guide to mint errors
It will help you pin down what's an error and what's PMD.

Definitely post mint damage. Looks like a gravel parking lot find. It certainly did not leave the mint looking that way!
