Just found this hunting through a family member's old box of pennies. Had high hopes for the hunt as it was close to a full $25 bank box-worth and the coins hadn't been touched since the mid 90s (so most of the 80s and 90s cents were in MS condition), but didn't really pan out. Only finds were a good greaser on a '74-D, a very nice lam on '67, and this DDO. Still, this was pretty nice, since it's a solid doubled die and it came just at the end of the box. It's a class 6, so kind of hard to see without a side by side, which is why I've included pictures of a regular 1976 along with it. I would be very grateful if anyone could help me with the ID - I believe it's a WDDO-003, since the R of LIBERTY doesn't seem quite thick enough to be WDDO-002 (AKA DDO-001), but the tail of the R in TRUST on my coin looks a lot wider than on Wexler's site (especially the extra thickness on the serif). Could it be an unlisted variety?

Definitely doesn't match WDDO-002, the E in WE tells me that.

Not for sure about WDDO-003 however. My guess is no, but I don't know.

I've passed over some cents like this, not thinking they were DDOs. If this is a DDO, then I'm going to be cursing myself.

It's definitely a DDO, just not sure which/if it's listed. The easiest way to spot it is the thickness of the date, the width of the spaces between the bars of the E in WE and the tail of the R in TRUST. This one is a pretty significant extra thickness DDO, so if you saw it under your scope, I'm guessing you'd know it. It was an immediate "this one's different" after seeing about 30 dates with the regular width compared to this.

Well crap then. I might've had one similar to yours then...lost in my bag of cents. I simply thought that that year had WWHOs that were overly thick.

In fact I'm 100% sure I came across one just like this. Crap! Ah well, learning lesson. I guess I passed it up because there was no split serifs.

Either WDDR-003 or unlisted. The experts will tell you which one it is.

There actually is a "split" serif to some extent on the tail of the R. One of the defining characteristics of class 6 doubling is that the serifs don't actually split, but if you look at the tail of the R and compare it to the photo I posted of a regular 76 below, you can see that the serif has been widened to a pretty ridiculous blob. Basically a split serif if you filled in the space between the split like the letter/number had been dragged through sand from one position to the other rather than being stamped twice.

Thanks, Coop, but unfortunately, the problem I'm having is the low quality of the image on Wexler's site. The R in TRUST on WDDO-003 is cast in shadow, which makes it impossible (for me at least) to tell if the serif is wide enough to be a match. I'm almost sure the coin I found is CopperCoins' 1976-1DO-002, but I can't tell if that's the same as WDDO-003, and it isn't listed on either site if there's a cross reference. Also unfortunate is the fact that the coin documented on CopperCoins is in quite poor condition. Would be nice to know if the two varieties are the same to just be 100% certain it's one and not the other.

You might submit images of it to John Wexler to see what he thinks. (The better larger images you can include, the more he will be able to see.

Will he look at it if I just send them? I don't want to take advantage of his time since I know he does attributions as a source of income.

Thanks, E&V!

Emailed John Wexler to ask him if WDDO-003 was the same die as 1976P-1DO-002, and he said that, while he didn't own the coin itself, he believes they are the same die. I'm gonna call it in that case as being WDDO-003/1976P-1DO-002 since that means there are not two, but rather one remaining known die it could be.
