My local drive-thru bank said that they have no coin to spare (I asked if they have any type of coin to spare, and they said come back next week to check). I went to the gas station where my friend works, and he sold me $5 in cents, which was very nice. He said he would have given me $10 in cents, but the gas station was low on coin also. At least I got $5 in cents. Has anyone ever heard a drive thru bank say "We have no coin to spare"?

Probably happens more than you realize. My wife was a bank manager for years....sometimes deliveries are delayed or interrupted, which is something I could see with whats going on around the country. Time of the month, year and location also play some part in shortages.

The FED must be roll hunting in search of silver so they can desperately melt and sell so they can further prop up the economy?

It would be way more productive if they stopped minting the one cent coin.

Drive through widows of most banks don't give coin rolls out . Too much of a hassle for them . Put a mask on and go into the bank , I bet they'll have them .

@tcp.... Yep, sometimes my branch is dry but luckily there are a couple banks in my area that don't even require me to have an account w/ them to get coins.

When a bank says that it has no coin to spare, they may not just be fobbing you off.
They may need to keep quite a large supply for their commercial customers, such as shop keepers and supermarkets, etc.

These customers are far more important to a bank than CRH'ers.

Yes this happens from time to time and sometimes people turn in so much that they can't order in new coin and you have to take customer wrapped to deplete their stock so they can order more.

If they are out of coin. It might be a good time to talk to the vault manager about ordering you a box every week or two for your needs if you search cents, that's $25 which isn't too big a deal for most people but that will get you a stead supply to search through from one place without hunting around stores and banks.

The key is getting r o know people at the bank and being friendly and not causing a problem or a hassle. The easier it is for them the more likely they are to do it.

And don't bring it back to them if they are ordering a box for you it just makes it harder to get coin from them you haven't already searched through.

I placed an email order for dollar coins last week, and I got a call back from the bank this week that they have been told orders for rolls of cents, nickels, dimes, and quarters are being limited. I supposed with all the contact-less paying and less physical purchases, the amount of coins in circulation has been reduced. And I believe the mint is behind in production of new coins. Hopefully, this won't apply to dollar coins.

First of all, the main branch is closed till July. Second of all, I know all of the tellers in the main branch very well, and for years I would walk in every week and get a cent box (without the need to order it). Now that the main branch is closed, and I don't know the drive-thru tellers all that well, it will really impact my coin roll hunting. Also I dump there because I don't have a license, and my mom doesn't want to drive me around to a bunch of different banks to dump. I am 21 years old, and can't get a license yet for personal reasons. It sucks.

Got wind here on the West Coast from another roll hunter on the East. Could be like someone said less of a need. Or possibly someone got sick in a FED facility or delivery of coin has become dangerous for the armored services couriers as there is very little social distance in a truck, and as I recall you need at least two if not three people at all times to escort funds to a financial institution. Let's just hope it clears up in a few weeks.

I've run into that issue before.

curiously, I have also run into the bank not wanting to take any rolled-up coins. I have also run into the issue of the bank being stingy with giving out coin wrappers. if I ask for more than 5 or 10 of any denomination & they give me this look like I'm speaking martian or that I've just asked for their firstborn. I solved that by finding quality wrappers online. I don't have to ask the bank for them anymore.

sometimes I think these are lame excuses, teller doesn't want to get off the seat he/she is sitting on. I have a few limited alternatives to the bank, though. my bank currently requires that I call ahead & make an appointment if I need to go into the lobby.... I pass on that. I'm eyeing a new bank, anyway. a new bank just opened that is closer to me, if/when the virus thing has passed i'll switch banks, but only if I can buy & deposit coin rolls.
