I received a coin in an E-bay auction. It is not the coin pictured, but it is clearly dated 1902 and the mint is clearly cc. It is about EF condition. Is this a counterfeit, or a rarity?

RDANIELS,

The last regular minting of CC Morgan dollars was 1893. There is a verified variety 1900 O/CC where New Orleans stamped their mintmark into a CC reverse die. If your piece is truly a 1902 CC, then it is counterfeit.

1902-CC anything would be a counterfeit. Can you link us to the auction ? A pic would be nice too.
Do some research before buying a coin on ebay. Basic knowledge would have prevented this...

If this is the auction in question, then it looks like a 1902-S from the pictures.

Something does not look right. Looks almost cast by the roughness of the fields. The seller does not inspire any confidence either. I'd return it...

Yes, that is the picture that was included in the listing. However, the coin received did not match the picture. The coin I received has worn cartwheel, particularly from 7 o'clock to 10 o'clock. It was also dirtier than the image on the listing. The mint mark has two distinct letters, "cc". I have never tried to photograph a coin, so don't know if I will have success attaching a photo.

Interesting. I took a look at the obverse too and something just does not look right. Its that feeling you get sometimes..lol (to me from the photos it looks cleaned on the obverse and the breast feathers should be more visible on the reverse for a san fran coin AU ?) I wish there were more photographs. what do you think?

The 1902 shown in the auction is almost certainly fake, the 1902 CC you received is DEFINITELY fake, and from looking at his completed auctions he sold what appears to be a real 1971 Ike dollar and three 1903 dollars all using the same pictures and the pictures show a coin with a VG obv and an AU reverse. So he seems to be just grabbing whatever pictures he can find, they will bear no relationship to what you will actually receive. This is a scammer.

Oh and look at the return policy. Returns will get an exchange and you will pay for return shipping. So once he has your money you AREN'T going to get it back. I bet you'll have to pay to have the exchanged item shipped back to you as well. If you don't pay he'll probably just keep your money and the return.

if you paid with paypal you may be able to make a charge back because of item received is different from item listed but I am not 100% sure how that works. But I can guarantee you if it is a 1902-CC it is a fake so that should be enough reason to get your money back from paypal

Paypal actually has a catagory for counterfiet items when you file a dispute .

but you may have to provide a letter from an expert at your own expense to prove it .

here is a copy of the paragraph that was included in an email I received from paypal concerning a dispute I filed (non coin related) but is in the process of being evaluated by pay pal .

We will contact you by email and ask you to provide additional information.
If you're filing a claim because you believe that you received counterfeit
merchandise, we may ask you to submit a letter of inauthenticity from a
reputable expert who can substantiate your claim.
