Why is this coin graded a MS67?
Can I request this guy to grade my coins? (humor)
This is their description:
A wonderful array of rich patina covers lustrous, superb gem surfaces. Scarce in the top grades, with an NGC population of 12 with a lone example finer.

The toning likely got the coin 2 extra points, personally I don't understand why this is seen as an "eye appealing" example, the toning is way too noisy and it just feels like it completely overwhelms any other characteristics of this coin, as well as dulls what could be an extremely lustrous coin.

Eye appeal to me is 3/10

Scratches everywhere, looks to have been cleaned, ugly toning, and overall terrible eye appeal, I would say AU or MS DETAILS at most, or an F in school grading scales

Because it is MS67. I'm assuming you think that the breaks in toning are chatter

I find it extremely unattractive. I'd hate to buy an MS67 coin "sight unseen" in an auction and end up with that!

I actually like the toning. Guess I'm the minority.

I am with Grapes , that is a fantastic example of an otherwise Common Morgan .
Willing to bet in hand , you would leave drool marks all over the plastic Holder!

I like the toning but all the breaks in the toning kill the eye appeal. 21's really didn't tone well. @Cascade's avatar coin is one of the few exceptions...

The numerous toning breaks affect the eye appeal, but not the grade. Hard to tell from the photos, but I suspect it has very few bag marks and great luster in hand.

Not a fan in the least. As stated, breaks in the toning are not scratches, but I do see a couple good gashes on the obverse, one right about the eye.

Technically, not a 67, maybe a 65.... or even a 66, tough to tell through the toning.... but no 67. Personally, never understood the bump in points for toning. Bottom line, toning can change! Grade the coin based on the way the system was Initially intended, and if someone wants to pay a premium for toning, they will!

Grading is subjective, but TPG's have made it even more subjective, this being one of many examples.

Rant over.

My guess is that in hand, the piece has exceptional luster and the toning appears to be quite attractive.

It's almost like a piece of abstract art, where prices never make any sense to the common mind.

If there were no breaks, I would love this coin. Toning is amazing, but those breaks are unattractive to my eyes.
