To the coin grading experts,

I am considering the purchase of the 1921 Peace dollar shown in the attached photos. Can you tell me your assessment of the grade of this coin? MS ?

Also, if possible, do you think there are any cleaning, dipping, etc. issues with it?

Thanks so much.

Pics are too overexposed to see surface detail clearly.

Here are better photos - darker and more contrast. I have been told that the original photos were taken from an encased 1921 Peace dollar. There is a cloudy area in front of Liberty's mouth which was on the holder. The cloudy area has been wiped clean from the case and does not appear on the coin.

Thanks again.

I think MS62 there are a few dings on her face. As to cleaned/dipped. She is 99 years old and pretty white seriously doubt she looks like that without some help. Chances are good she and any bright silver coin have been dipped.

I'm in the XF range for this coin.

What slab is it in, and what grade is on the slab?

John 1 - I wanted an unbiased opinion, so I did not reveal the TPG company or the grade. However, perhaps you can tell me if the TPG is off in its assessment.

The TPG is ICG. Its certified grade for the Peace dollar is MS61. The coin is not identified as "Detail/s"

I do not like ICG and MS61 seems on the high end.

To me, the left obverse field looks polished.

Tough from the pics, but I'd say mid AU, maybe... maybe a 58 in hand.

I sure wouldn't pay UNC money for it though

MS61 seems like an odd grade for that one. While the images are sub-par for accurate grading I do not see many contact marks just the typical very soft strike. If truly MS I would expect a number or two higher as the strike should not affect the grade at that level. If lightly circulated I would expect AU55/58.

All 1921 Peace dollars were minted in high relief. They changed to low relief in 1922,but there are some known 1922 hie relief.

obviously a weak strike both sides. this may be one you need in hand to grade accurately. my first thought was low MS as I'm not seeing wear. maybe less lighting would help as the glare is overpowering most of the surfaces

The 1921 Peace dollar is notorious for weak strikes and this one is no exception. I think it could go MS-61, but I would look for a different example IMO.
