My daughter bought several Kennedy half dollars out of the register at her store tonight and found this 1972 with a wad of metal covering where the D mint mark or no mark for Philadelphia would be at. I believe it's from someone heating the coin and allowing the metal to drip or run down the coin but she wanted me to ask you guys what your thoughts are. Man made or mint error?

It could have been subjected to high heat or that could be solder left on the coin from something being attached. If it's overweight, my guess would be solder. Either way, it's not an error.
