I found this 1978 cent a few days ago. I look as if there are other numbers mixed in with the date. Is this an error coin and if so is it known by anyone. Thank you for your help

In order to fully help you we'd need much better photos, including overall shots of the whole coin, both sides. From what you have shown us, I see no other numbers other than the 78. Many times we get reports of seeing extra numbers other the actual minted numbers, this is observation is known as " Pareidolia" (similar to seeing shapes in clouds).

If what you are seeing is larger/smaller than the normal size of the devices, then it is not a die related event. If it were die related it would be raised /lower than the fields like the other devices on the coin. When they are the same height as the fields, they are probably just stains.

Circulation damage I'm thinking. Clear, high resolution photos of both sides of the coin would help set the context for what we're seeing.

I tried to get better pictures of it. On the back the words "E PLURIBUS UNUM" are different then I have seen. The center of the r is especially noticable.
