Still...i got my money back and even if I dont want to look at the thing again ill stick it in a drawer until I can do that sg test , heck I may as well scratch it to see but I wont..its still a very nice replica.

Quote: .i contacted the guy and put my thoughts forward on the matter and he gave me my money back and didnt ask for the coin back..what does that tell us? Diameter/thickness of penny and 4.9gr? I'm still holding out you'll get lucky here. Keep that one safe, and let us know what happens with tests.

I will do KurtS , thanks for all your help and thanks to manilagalleontrade and all the others. It sure had us going eh ? I will do the tests KurtS as I agree its too heavy and looks too nice to be a cheap repica , had me fooled. I thought for sure its gold , I dont know what to think now other than do whatever tests I can. Ive seen a pen that claims to be a way to test gold , I'm sure you guys have too , its around $35 and lasts up to 1 year. I dont buy much gold so I dont know if its worthwhile and would it detect gold plate as gold ?
I just had an idea , I have a metal detecter which has sensitive settings for gold , ill give that a go and see what happens.

Well...briefly put--that "pen" must contain chemicals that would harm your coin/copy, genuine or not. Even a real gold coin contains copper that's vulnerable to harsh chemicals. SG is really conclusive enough for composition; there is no other alloy that comes close in density. Well, tungsten but nobody coins/copies using that metal. A metal detector won't I'm sorry to say--despite their outlandish claims. I would offer to do the SG test myself for you, if you're up to posting w/tracking and all that. People here can vouch for me being totally reliable.

Thats a kind offer KurtS , ive nothing to lose.I dont know how pm works here or should I post my email addy? In my profile ive selected let members email me , once I get your address and double check here its actually you ill send this off.Itll be worth the postage rates to put this one to rest. Is there a history of these particular copies?I wouldnt have thought so , ive looked for days on line typing what I took to be the right things into search. Ive seen copies of it yes , but they are so poorly done its immediately noticable this isn't a tourist souvineer type. Why isn't ebay covered in these ?That was my first search

I'll PM you so you can be sure I'm the one--it will be from KurtS. I might not be able to offer an opinion on the coin's origin, but we should be able to get a good idea on composition in terms of gold vs base metal. I'll take some more nice photos for the forum too.

the source of authenticity is the seller who does not even know what coin this is. ??

Oh I think he knows what it is Manilagalleontrade , he couldnt give me my money back fast enough when I showed up. We're all clear on its a fake now , how it almost fooled us is commendable , its an excellent fake. Somebody suggested early on its cast , that seems spot on. I got your email KurtS , its snowing pretty good here but I have to get to the post office tomorrow regardless of weather , all kinds of cards and mail to send.Ill get this ready to send tonight and itll be on its way tomorrow. I like your idea of getting A1 pics Kurt , I see it one of two ways and one a front runner. Either I'm years behind on this replica scam and was in right place at the right time to be duped or its a new scam and this is early warning for us all. If these items make their way to ebay ..Lord help the buyers because this looks as real as youd expect in any photo. Good photos of why its fake will serve us all well in times to come.

No rush on shipping it, because I know how busy the holidays get...particularly the post office. We'll see how fooled we all were...if the SG turns out to be over 12 (and I suspect it will) I'll have more to say when the coin arrives...have a great holiday!

I received the coin--Thanks! Doing some SG tests only confirms what people here already know. The first thing I noticed is the coin gave the sensation of being heavy, but it's sort of a perceptual trick. When you hold the coin, you think it is thinner than it actually is, but the test revealed the truth. The result of 3 tests gave a SG of 9.25, which could easily be gold plating over copper or some other base metal. With this thickness, a real .917 gold coin would weigh about 9 grams, not 4.88g I'll post some pics later--the details should be interesting to see, especially the obviously cast edge.

Thanks KurtS , I think I also knew it was a fake when I was given my money back and wasnt asked to return the coin. Its a nice replica , thank you for confirming it is indeed a fake.I was interested in the material its made of as I too felt it was heavy for its size. It does look just like gold eh?

Before I send this off, I took another photo to capture details for comparison with other coins that collectors may find.
