Is it just me, or is the cheek line a bit overexaggerated on this penny?

There is a slight scratch south of the normal cheek line...ignore that.

Why would the cheek be so overly defined? Is that an error?

As coop has shown, you have a normal 1998-D cent. No error or damage.

The crease follows the correct contouring, it just looks so abnormal because it is so defined. It is even visible with the naked eye. Weird...

Of course, the VERY NEXT PENNY I picked up was another 1998D with a deeply defined cheek. Only on the second one the northern end transitioned into the nose better. I guess I'm getting too used to looking at the crappy shield pennies. :/
