Since people were so kind with my first posts, I thought I'd throw up another of my accumulations - an 1839 cent. I know taste is subjective, but I find this design much less attractive than the Draped Bust of the early 19th century coins...
What's your rating? I'd put this one at VG08, but my skills are suspect, as one who's new at this.

I'd agree with VG08, but sadly this one is a Details, ED example.

Is ED environmental damage or edge damage? (I know it's not what they advertise pills for in those late-night tv ads.)
Thanks.

The planchet issues will detail the coin due to the corrosion and pitting. That said, the appearance could be improved with a short submersion in pure industrial acetone. That might remove the white crud on the obverse and some of the surface dirt.

It looks like the coin had a fairly old cleaning, and is retoning. I don't think the old cleaning detracts too much from the appearance, and it likely would be market acceptable, if the corrosion and pitting were not present.

In terms of the technical grade, excluding the details designation, the obverse is a challenge. There is less detail than I would expect on the hair curls, and more detail on the hair knot. VG-08 sounds about right on balance for the obverse. The reverse is nicer. There is enough detail in the leaves to bump the reverse to VG-10.

The net result is VG Details.

Well, since it came free in a bag of coins an older colleague gave me, I certainly can't complain at all (I did tell him that he'd given me some potentially valuable coins - with specifics, and his response was 'Enjoy!' so I certainly will.).

I think VG Details fits at best for most of the coin, but the ED makes it hard to claim VG otherwise. Since the wear on the obv center to west does not repeat in the same location on the rev to the same degree, is it far to suspect rubbing/friction on the obv? Is there another damage mechanism that would ruin one side and not the reverse in the corresponding location?

Stay well,
