I have this beautiful red 1839 Coronet One Cent piece. I'm new to collecting and looking for help with which coin variety & the grade.
I believe it's a silly head grade good.
Thank you in advance. Beth

Beautiful! Alas, I suspect it is the kind of red that comes from cleaning.

Not familiar with the 1839 varieties (though I'd love to get some!), so not very confident, but offhand I suspect it is the latest - Braided Hair.

Yep it's a silly head. Here is a graphic that should help you tell the differences in the large cent heads of 1839...

The red is from being scrubbed or rubbed with a cloth from a cleaning most likely. As to grade I would give it almost good maybe a good or G-4

There is a lot of detail worn off despite the red color. Note the flatness of the stars, and hair and how the word LIBERTY in the headress is worn down and missing letters.

To better see the various grades of large cents and all US coin series really, become familar with PCGS's Photograde site. here is the page for the large cents of this design.

https://www.PCGS.com/photograde/#/B...dCent/Grades you can scroll using the arrows at either side to change the grades, or use the dots at the bottom of the coins, to see all the other series just click the start over at the bottom of the page. Clicking on a coin will bring up a larger photo of it.

I appreciate the graphic on 1839 hair types. Very informative and easy to use. I agree with the assessment of damage from rubbing the coin to make it shiny. There were also posh/ritzy hotels that cleaned your coins for you so you wouldn't have to touch dirty ones!

Stay well,

I only knew of one hotel the St. Francis in San Francisco, CA. A very historic and neat hotel to stay at.

i agree with the others. the red tone you are seeing is not original to the coin. someone over the years decided to clean her up. the coin may even have had time in the ground at one time. G details (ED)/cleaned. for a newbie ED is environmental damage.
