I purchased this from a dealer near where I grew up about 3 years ago. Knowing my interest in history, he actually said as I walked into the shop, "I have something you need to have." The result was this Virginia half penny. It's worn, but although it doesn't look great, it's a chance to own a really unusual coin (for me) with a lot of history behind it. I know high-grade examples go for hundreds of dollars, and I paid about $30 for this one.
I believe the wear is honest circulation, and I'm wondering what the forum members think.

Wow it's a cool piece of history, Id say it's better than a lot I've seen before, maybe an AG3? It's not quite full good to me as the rims are gone completely and lots of wear going into the design elements, but it's not as bad as P01 or FR2 either IMO. This one is a really clean planchet example, no real detail type issues seen so often of copper coinage from this era.

That's really awesome. I don't know much about coins but when I was a kid my grandparents auctioned of the estate of a coin dealer and his son gave me a 1795 Half Cent, along with quite a few others. I wish I still had them. They were stolen

I think AG-03 makes sense. There's enough detail to make a credible claim to claim. I agree that it's a nice historical piece without "environmental damage" or other problems. I wonder how many hundreds of hands touched that coin over the centuries!

Stay well,

It's unlikely, but wild to think Patrick Henry may have paid for a Williamsburg bar tab (in part) using this coin....
