Wow! That person was lucky and that's such a cool coin. If I was at that auction I would have figured it was plugged.

Quote: The process of finding out the truth about the coin took more than two years and was not without its skeptics. "I actually showed it to a local coin dealer who said, 'No, no that's nothing,'" he recalled. It's good to trust your instincts. What a find...I remember reading this pattern was an idea proposed by Jefferson to reduce the size of the cent, but it was deemed too labor-intensive. A better pic of this pattern:

This is the part that really bugs me:
"I actually showed it to a local coin dealer who said, 'No, no that's nothing,'" he recalled.
I'm sure we've all been to dealers like that, though.

Quote: I'm sure we've all been to dealers like that, though. Some dealers act like there's nothing left to learn. At shows, I'll sometimes tell a dealer if he has an IHC, FE or Canadian variety (if I'm not buying). Often I'll get this skeptical "who are you...?" look; it's amusing.

Quote: "I actually showed it to a local coin dealer who said, 'No, no that's nothing,'" That's why I wouldn't even bother showing something like this to dealers I don't know or don't know me. What's the point. Just send it to ANACS or NCS and be done with it.

Wow! It wouldn't matter if that was buried w/grafitti. A holed example fetched $15K in a 2006 auction.
