Wow! That person was lucky and that's such a cool coin. If I was at that auction I would have figured it was plugged.

The process of finding out the truth about the coin took more than two years and was not without its skeptics.
"I actually showed it to a local coin dealer who said, 'No, no that's nothing,'" he recalled.

It's good to trust your instincts. What a find...I remember reading this pattern was an idea proposed by Jefferson to reduce the size of the cent, but it was deemed too labor-intensive.

A better pic of this pattern:

This is the part that really bugs me:

"I actually showed it to a local coin dealer who said, 'No, no that's nothing,'" he recalled.

I'm sure we've all been to dealers like that, though.

Some dealers act like there's nothing left to learn.
At shows, I'll sometimes tell a dealer if he has an IHC, FE or Canadian variety (if I'm not buying). Often I'll get this skeptical "who are you...?" look; it's amusing.

That's why I wouldn't even bother showing something like this to dealers I don't know or don't know me. What's the point. Just send it to ANACS or NCS and be done with it.

Wow! It wouldn't matter if that was buried w/grafitti.
A holed example fetched $15K in a 2006 auction.
